A Maharashtrian Diwali killa, built thousands of miles from the Sahyadri.

Back home, Diwali means a killa in the courtyard. Here there was no courtyard and no mud. So we made both.

A pile of earth, packed and shaped until it looked like a hill.

The darwaja, the path winding up, the small stuff that makes it a fort.

Because the kids growing up here should not only hear about it. They should get mud on their hands too.
